2022 Ford Explorer
When you're in need of a midsize SUV to carry the family, sports or camping equipment, and the dog, consider the 2022 Ford Explorer. Now in its sixth generation, the Ford Explorer remains one of the most popular three-row SUVs on the market.
Trim Levels
You can find the perfect Explorer to fit your lifestyle from eight trims. The trims are the base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, King Ranch, and the upscale Platinum. Both the Limited and Platinum trims are available as hybrids.
This bold-looking SUV has modern styling with sculpted body panels, an aggressive front end, and a sporty rear. All trims come with a power liftgate, and all but the base come with roof rails to carry a cargo box or adventure toys. Make your 2022 Explorer stand out from the crowd with exterior color choices like Stone Red or Forged Green.
Engine
This mighty SUV comes with three engine options. The five lower trims come with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that delivers 310 pound-feet of torque and 300 horsepower. Under the hood of the upper trims, you'll find a more powerful turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine that produces 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. For the hybrid trims, you get a 3.3-liter V-6 engine mated with an electric motor that pumps out 318 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission completes the powertrain for all three engines.
Performance
The 2022 Explorer is quite capable whether you take it on back roads or through city streets. Rear-wheel drive comes standard on all but the off-road-ready Timberline trim, which comes with four-wheel drive. The latter drivetrain is available for the other trims. All tiers come with a terrain management system, front MacPherson struts, front and rear gas-pressurized hydraulic shocks, and electronic-assisted power steering. When properly equipped, the Ford Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Interior
With three rows of seats, the Explorer can fit up to seven people. On all but the base trim, you can swap the second-row bench seat for two captain's chairs that can seat up to six people. You'll notice the well-appointed features inside of the 2022 Explorer. Luxurious features found on the upper trims include leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and, on select trims, a dual-panel sunroof. You have plenty of room for gear inside the Explorer. Depending on how you configure the seats, you can get up to 87.8 cubic feet of storage space.
Technology features include Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen. The upper trims get a 10.1-inch LCD capacitive portrait touch screen that's available for the lower levels. The infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Available features include a wireless charging pad and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.
Safety Features
It's nice to know that your 2022 Explorer comes equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technology. Trailer sway control, side-wind stabilization, and blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert come standard. Additional features include pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and a lane mitigation system.
