The North Carolina Aviation Museum

Aviation enthusiasts won’t want to miss the North Carolina Aviation Museum, located about 10 miles from downtown inside the Asheboro Regional Airport at 2222 Pilots View Rd.

Spanning some 20,000 square feet of space, two hangars proudly house military and civilian aircraft, wartime mementos, artwork, historically correct plane models, and much more. Noteworthy aircraft and aircraft engines on display include a Piper J-3 Flitfire once flown by Orville Wright, and a massive 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp piston engine.

The American Classic Motorcycle Museum

If you’re a fan of vintage motorcycles, pop a wheelie and head for the American Classic Motorcycle Museum. Located just a few miles from the city center at 1170 U.S. Hwy 64 W, it showcases classic motorcycles dating from the 1950s through the 1990s.

One of the highlights of a visit to this museum is a stroll through its impressive collection of Harleys, said to be one of the country’s largest privately held collections of this iconic motorcycle.

The Richard Petty Museum

Race car fans should start their engines and head for the Richard Petty Museum, located about 10 miles north of Asheboro at 309 Branson Mill Road, Randleman, NC. The museum showcases the life and career of NASCAR legend Richard Petty with several exhibits that explore his storied racing career and his contributions to NASCAR history.

Explore the Petty Garage while you’re there, where you’ll see real race cars being worked on in a fully operational speed and restoration facility.

The North Carolina Pottery Center

Here’s a great destination if you’re interested in learning more about North Carolina’s rich pottery tradition and the pottery-making process. About a 20-minute drive from Asheboro at 233 East Ave, Seagrove, NC, the Center is home to several pottery studios and galleries, where you can watch potters at work and browse a wide selection of hand-crafted pottery.

The Center is also home to acclaimed educational programs and workshops, including classes for beginners and experienced potters alike.
